The Abraham
Window
Abraham is called a "Patriarch," which means that he is a father-ruler. In
biblical history the heads of families were called patriarchs; Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and
Jacob's twelve sons were all patriarchs. The Patriarch Abraham lived in Chaldea, and at
God's command, he came to the land of Canaan and became the founder of the Hebrew Nation.
He was the father of Isaac, grandfather of Jacob, and ancestor of Christ.
One day God called Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Isaac. Though he loved his son
dearly, Abraham obeyed and had his dagger drawn for the sacrifice (see window) when an
angel stayed his hand. The test was now over and God knew that Abraham loved his Lord more
than his own son. Abraham's sacrifice is a prototype of our Lord's sacrifice. Abraham was
ready to sacrifice his only son, as the Father sacrificed His only Son, Jesus.
The shield studded with stars near the bottom of the window represents the shield of faith
with which Abraham protected himself, and the stars are the numerous descendents which God
promised Abraham: "I will multiply your descendents as the stars of the
heavens." Gen. 22:17.
One star is bigger than the others and it is distinguished by a cross that represents
Jesus Christ, the greatest among the descendents of Abraham.
God required of Abraham faith and fidelity, as He does also from us who are Abraham's
spiritual children.
