The
Annunciation Window
The life of Jesus begins with the story of the angel coming to Mary: "The Angel
Gabriel was sent by God to a virgin espoused to a man named Joseph; her name was Mary. The
angel said, 'Hail, Full of Grace
Blessed are you among women
you shall conceive
a son and his name will be Jesus.' Mary said, 'How shall this be done, since I know not
man?' 'The Holy Spirit will come upon you
and the Holy One to be born shall be the
Son of God.' And Mary said, 'Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according
to your word.'" (Lk 1:26-38)
This consent of Mary became known as her "Fiat", her "Yes" to the
Lord. It has never ceased since the Lord's birth: the flight into Egypt, in the temple
where she brought Him to be consecrated, at strategic times in His public life as at the
miracle of Cana, in His passion and under the Cross at Calvary. She mothered the infant
church and, since the Assumption, has not ceased her mediation in favor of all people.
The maternity of Mary began with the consent she gave in faith at the Annunciation and
will last until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Vatican Council II has
proclaimed her "Mary, the Mother of the Church." Her uniqueness has not come
from leading a holy life, for all the saints did that, but rather from the exalted
sanctity she has enjoyed as one full of grace.
