The Call Of The
Apostles Window
God's way has been to come to us through other human beings. While each person must find
Him in his own heart, God gives us His love and help most often through others. He uses
other men and women to draw us to Himself. In the Old Testament God always taught His
people and led them through people specially chosen by Him
priests and prophets.
Christ chose the twelve apostles. "And He appointed twelve that they might be with
Him and that He might send them forth to preach." (Mk 3:14)
St. Luke describes the Call in Ch 6:12: "He went out into the hills and after a night
of prayer, He summoned His disciples and picked out twelve of them: Simon, whom He called
'Peter' and his brother Andrew; James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James,
the son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who
became a traitor."
They were to carry on Christ's own work as prophet, priest and king; they were to teach
all mankind: "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." (Mt 28:18) They
were to teach with authority: "He who hears you, hears me." (Lk 10:16) They were
to be instruments of forgiveness: "If you forgive men's sins, they are
forgiven." (Jn 20:21) They would make Christ present in a special way: "This is
My Body
do this in remembrance of Me." (1 Cor 11:23)
