The Baptism of Christ Window
The baptism of Christ in the Jordan River by St. John the Baptist is described by all four
Evangelists (Mt 3:13-17; Mk 1:9-12; Lk 3:21-22; Jn 1:29-34). Our Lord comes from Nazareth
to associate Himself in baptism with those who, because of the preaching of John, are
ready to share in the promises of the Messianic times. He is baptized by John in the
waters of the Jordan at the place, according to tradition, where the river enters the Dead
Sea.
The inversion of roles surprises John, who is assured by Christ that on this occasion it
must be accepted since it is the Divine Will. Submission to baptism is an admission of sin
on the part of other men, but in the case of Christ, it was an act of humility.
Christ leaves the water immediately after baptism and God the Father publicly acknowledges
Jesus as His Son: "This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased." Then the
Holy Spirit descends in the form of a dove. The coming of the Spirit is the solemn
inauguration of the work of Jesus.
In the window the outstretched hand of St. John the Baptist can be seen as our Lord stands
in the waters of the Jordan.
