The David Window
After the Judges (who ruled for 350 years), Kings ruled Israel. Saul was the first King;
David was the second (1052-1012 B.C.) and then came David's son, Solomon. In many ways
David prefigured Christ. He had the same birthplace - Bethlehem (Lk 2:4) and belonged to
the same house and family. David was a shepherd, and Christ called Himself the Good
Shepherd. David was anointed King and Christ is our King. David was betrayed by
Achitophel; Christ, by Judas.
David holds a harp. There are many references to David's musical skill in the Old
Testament. When the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Jerusalem, David had 4000 singers
present. He himself sang and played the harp. He is considered the chief author of the
Book of Psalms.
Beneath David is a star-like design formed by imposing one triangle upon another. It may
be called the Creator's Star, for it has six prongs representing the six days of Creation.
It is also called the Star of David (Kings 22:36).
One of David's feats was the slaying of Goliath the Philistine. Goliath represents the
monster, sin. As David overcame Goliath, so Christ overcame sin.
Toward the bottom of the window is pictured the temple designed by David and built by his
son, Solomon. Four centuries later it was destroyed. After the Babylonian captivity, it
was rebuilt and used for worship for 500 years until 19 B.C. when Herod remodeled it. It
was in this temple that our Lord and the Apostles worshipped. In 70 A.D. the Roman legions
did not leave "a stone upon a stone."
In the cornerstone are the superimposed Greek letters CHI (X) and RHO (P), a monogram and
symbol for Christ. They are the first two letters of the Greek "Khristos."
"The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone." (Ps 118:22)
