Archbishop Gercke
Archbishop Daniel J. Gercke was the fifth son of fourteen children born of a German
Lutheran father and an Irish Catholic mother. He was ordained to the priesthood in
Philadelphia in 1901. Having served in the Philippines for a number of years, he was
consecrated Bishop of the Tucson Diocese in 1923, which then comprised all of Arizona and
part of New Mexico. When the Diocese of Gallup was established in 1939, the five northern
counties of Arizona became part of it. The Archbishop retired in 1960 after 37 years of
noble service. He died in 1964, not living to see the Diocese of Phoenix established,
which took place in 1969. During his episcopate, many of the parishes and schools in the
Tucson and Phoenix areas were formed, including St. Theresa. He was a holy man, an avid
scholastic reader and a great Bishop. His motto was "Everything for Jesus." He
lived it well.
