The North American Martyrs
Saints Isaac Jogues, John LaLande and Rene Goupil, missionaries from France, were three of
eight Jesuits who preached the Gospel to the Huron and Iroquois Indians in the United
States and Canada. Father Isaac Jogues was captured and spent thirteen months enslaved and
tortured before he was rescued by the Dutch. He returned two years later to continue his
work. In 1646 he visited Auriesville, New York to negotiate a peace with the Iroquois. In
1648 he and his two companions, Rene Goupil and John LaLande, were seized, tortured and
put to death. The group of missionaries are known as the North American Martyrs and the
Church of North America celebrates their feast day on October l9th.
