The Moses Window
Moses is called a prophet; that is, one who receives a message from God and relays it to
the people. The calling of Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egypt into the promised
land is the crowning event of a long, providential preparation. Moses lived to be 120
years old and died about 1450 B.C.
The story of The Burning Bush, which appears in the window, is to be found in Exodus 3:1.
When God appeared to Moses in a burning bush which could not be consumed by fire, He gave
Moses his mission to go to Pharaoh and get the Israelites released so that they could
travel to the Promised Land.
The evening before the Israelites departed from Egypt, they killed a lamb and sprinkled
the blood on the doorposts and lintels. When the Angel of Death came to kill the
first-born in every home, he passed by the Hebrew dwellings and entered only the homes of
the Egyptians. This is called "The Passover."
Jesus is called the Paschal Lamb of the New Testament because He saves the life of the
soul as the lamb of the Old Testament saved the life of the body. The lamb in the window
picture is pouring out his blood into a cup, reminding us of Christ's pouring forth His
blood in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The message received by Moses on Mt. Sinai after the Exodus is to be found in the Books of
Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy and is known as the Ten Commandments. They
appear on the two tablets which the Prophet holds.
