The Nativity Window
The opening lines of St. John's Gospel record very beautifully the eternal presence of the
Word (Christ) and how that Word became man and lived among us.
"In the beginning was the Word.
The Word was with God
And the Word was God...
The Word was the true light
That enlightens all men...
The Word was made flesh.
He lived among us
And we saw His glory." (Jn 1:1,8,14)
This is indeed the mystery of the
Incarnation. Just as a new Covenant replaced the old, so also God chose to replace the
manner of His presence among men. One of the signs of God's covenant and presence with
Israel was the Tabernacle, and later, the Temple. In the New Covenant, Jesus took a body
and lived among His people.
The central mystery of Christianity, God becoming man, is depicted in the window with the
Blessed Mother in awe and devotion, adoring her Son. St. Joseph, guardian and foster
father, is reverently standing in the background. The Star reminds us of the Wise Men from
the East who followed a star and found the newborn Saviour.
