Our Lady of Guadalupe
Our Blessed Mother appeared to the Indian convert Juan Diego on Dec. 12, 1531, and left
with him a picture of herself on his cloak. The image shows the Blessed Virgin Mary with
her hands clasped in prayer, her features those of an Indian woman.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, near Mexico City on the hill of Tepeyac, is one of
the most celebrated places of pilgrimage in North America. The cloak of Juan Diego, with
the image of Our Blessed Mother on it; may be seen above the main altar of the Basilica.
It has been examined by textile experts who have not been able to explain the mysteries of
its weaving or of its dyes, or its ability to remain intact for more than 400 years.
The miraculous appearance of Our Lady brought about the conversion of millions of Indians
and Mexicans to Christianity. Throughout the centuries Our Blessed Mother has been
devoutly honored by them as Our Lady of Guadalupe. Pope Pius XI declared her the Patroness
of the Americas, and Bishop Edward A. McCarthy proclaimed her the Patroness of the Diocese
of Phoenix.
