The Prophets
Window
God reveals Himself through inspired men whom we call prophets. Many of the Old Testament
prophets left written messages and they are regarded as the literary prophets, four major
and ten minor The major prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel. Joel would be
the best known of the minor prophets. All of them were forerunners of the Great Prophet of
the New Testament, Christ.
Prophets had a fourfold mission: To protect the Mosaic Law, to advise Kings, to defend the
unprotected, and to foretell the future Messiah. Shown in the window is the great prophet
Isaiah, who was called to the office in 740 B.C. He has in his hand a scroll which brings
to mind a familiar quotation, "And the Lord said to me: 'Take thee a great book and
write in it'..." (Is 8:1)
Isaiah, being the great prophet of the Messiah, heeded the Lord and wrote, "Behold, a
virgin shall conceive and bear son and his name shall be called Immanuel." (Is 7:14)
