St. Martin de Porres and St. Rose
of Lima
St. Martin de Porres was born in Lima, Peru in 1579, the son of a Spanish knight and a
black woman. He led a life of holiness as a lay brother in the Dominican Friary at Lima,
and he was the first mulatto raised to sainthood by the Church. A friend to all the poor
especially the African slaves, he referred to himself as "Brother Broom,"
indicating his humility and subservience. He died in 1639, but when his body was exhumed
from its burial place several years later it was found incorrupt and his blood still
liquid. He was canonized in 1962.
St. Rose of Lima was born in 1586 and became a member of the Third Order of St. Dominic.
She led a life of penitential mortification in the midst of her family, at first to their
annoyance. Eventually it was her work which helped support her parents. She died in 1617
after 14 years of near solitude spent in much spiritual desolation, but with the
corresponding light of the companionship of the Blessed Virgin and her guardian angel. She
was the first canonized saint of the western world.
