Saint Paul
St. Paul is often referred to as the "Apostle of the Gentiles" because he was
the first to realize that the teaching of Jesus was for all people, not merely the Jewish
people. He spent most of his life in arduous and perilous missionary journeys, founding
churches throughout Asia Minor, and his letter to the Christians of early times reveal a
gradual understanding of Divine Revelation through the teaching of Jesus Christ. He
appears in our picture with the symbols of the sword and the scroll, reminding us that he
was a prolific writer under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and also that the Word of God
is like a sword which cuts through the false teachings of many and divides mankind into
those who accept Jesus as Lord and Savior and those who do not. After many persecutions
and a long imprisonment, he was also put to death by the sword.
