Saint Peter
St. Peter is often referred to as the "Prince of the Apostles" because he was
named their leader by Jesus and appointed as the first Pope of the Church founded by
Christ. He appears in our picture with the symbols of the keys and the lambs, reminding us
of the very important role that Jesus assigned to him as the first visible head of the
Church: "You are Peter and on this Rock I will build my Church
I will give to
you the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven
Feed my lambs; feed my sheep." Peter was
far from being a perfect man when chosen by Jesus, but he grew to love the Lord with all
his heart and followed Him faithfully even unto death. Legend has it that when Peter was
condemned to be crucified, he requested that he be fixed to the cross upside down, because
he was not worthy to die in the same way that Jesus died.
