The
Transfiguration Window
On Mt. Tabor Jesus chooses to reveal Himself in an unusual way. He invites Peter, James
and John to a high place and there, with Moses and Elijah, is transfigured before their
eyes in all His glory. He reveals to them how He is going to fulfill His work through His
Resurrection and Glorification. This implies a passing through suffering and death. The
experience is designed also to sustain the disciples during their own agony and
participation in the mystery of the Cross.
The glory overwhelms the disciples with a tremendous awe: fear before the Divine Presence.
The suggestion comes from Peter to build three tents, since God is going to dwell with His
own people at last. But the glory is not that of the Last Day but rather, it illuminates
only the face of Jesus and His clothing. A voice from the cloud ratifies the revelation
made by Christ to His disciples of His ultimate death, (Lk 9:31), and confirms Peter's
confession at Caesarea Philippi. (Mt 16:16) The words of God the Father are heard:
"This is My Beloved Son; hear Him." (Lk 9:35)
In salvation history the Transfiguration is a prophetic sign which points to the future
transfiguration of all Christians in Christ. The true Christian must realize that, before
there can be transfiguration with Christ, there must be configuration with Him; but the
Christian hopes that the work of the Holy Spirit will end in the triumphant glory of
ultimate transfiguration.
