August 17, 2005, Day 10
Pilgrimage log
Today we
had the best breakfast ever – there was bread again, but also scrambled
eggs, around six types of sausage and bacon, yogurt, cereal, and danishes.
We hopped on the bus and rode to the Catechesis and Mass at Bayer Arena. At
the arena we joined many other English speakers (about 10,000), as Cardinal
McCarrick of Washington D.C. spoke to us and celebrated Mass. We ran into
several friends there, and are still on the lookout for other friends that
we know are there (Matt H). After Mass we grabbed lunch with everyone else
(World Youth Day community meals), meeting people from all over the U.S.,
Ireland, and England among other places. We then hopped on our bus and went
to the Don Bosco Festival where music acts kept us entertained all
afternoon. The main theme was music without words, so a lot of the songs
had hand motions and dancing. Some of the favorites were the mime dancer,
the German rappers, and the Italian techno music. While the festival was
occurring, inside the adjoining church was confession and adoration. We
came back to the hotel a little earlier to rest up for tomorrow’s long day.
We did get back early enough to hop in the indoor pool at our hotel. Yeah,
we know how rough we have it….

Diary entry from Jared
Day 10, WYD
continues, and so does the fun. Had a late start today (wake up call at 7:30
today, yay). It started with a wonderful mass in ENGLISH this morning.
Before the mass began though, we met several groups of people including a
group from Ireland, wow! We also began to exchange presents that we brought
from home. I even got a few myself. Next was Cologne at last. There we went
to a festival for St. Don Bosco, the saint name for our teen center at St.
Thomas the Apostle. There we ran into a group from Poland. The day was full
of singing and dancing (let’s not forget German hip hop)! When we finally
got back to the hotel, we had a pool party with a scene that I will let
everybody tell there own folks when they get home. Don’t worry, it’s nothing
bad. What a day, though. I myself am really enjoying the energy that is
surging from all the youth here. It is really inspiring me to lay everything
aside and just praise the good Father. Pretty soon we will be seeing the
Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI himself. This place, this event is truly
amazing. When this is all over, I will have a story 100x larger than this
journal entry to tell everyone. I’m really enjoying myself. So, till I see
everybody again, God Bless the world!
