August 23, 2005, Day 16
Pilgrimage log
Today we got to sleep in a little bit again since our flight was not until 1:45pm. We ate a good breakfast in the hotel, and then took a shuttle bus to the airport. We said another sad good-bye, this time to David, our tour guide. He was taking a flight back to Rome, where he’ll have some vacation before leading another tour. Getting to the airport almost three hours early turned out to be just enough time to get everyone through check-in, Emigration, and multiple security points before boarding the plane. The flight from Frankfurt, Germany to San Francisco, was a long one, clocked at just over eleven hours. Along the way we watched, “The Interpreter,” “Ms. Congentiality 2,” and “Monster-In-Law.” The long journey was very scenic (for those two of eleven people in each row next to a window), passing over the Pacific, Arctic, and Atlantic Oceans, Mt. Rainier, Crater Lake, and from a distance, the Bay Bridge in San Francisco. People seemed more interested in the free soda that was available (as opposed to $2-3/can in Europe), and more importantly, ICE!!!! We landed at San Francisco at 4:10pm (1:10am Wed, Germany time). After grabbing a snack at the San Francisco and trying to stay awake so that we would sleep tonight, we noticed that our flight was being delayed. Trying to stay awake for 5 ˝ hours after being awake for 18 hours is tough to do. Around 9:30pm we boarded our plane and headed to Phoenix. Landing around 11:00pm or so, everyone was excited to see their family and friends and go home for a good nights sleep.
Thank you for all of your prayers and support of this pilgrimage. We carried all of you and your intentions with us. May all of our lives be enriched by this pilgrimage. And now, time to start planning for World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia!!!
