Diary entry from Camille
Our first day!
We flew first from Phoenix to Cincinnati, we had success with both
luggage and the flight no delays and nothing was lost. After 45 minutes we
boarded our next flight to Rome non-stop for nine hours. We had success
although we were all exhausted and our only delay was about an hour for the
plane to lift off. We landed and met our tour guide and headed to lunch
after a quick bite to eat and a brief stop at the hotel we were on our way
to one of the four main basilicas in Italy that we would see, Basilica di
Santa Maria Maggiore. So we began our day with an exciting start in one of
the most beautiful basilicas in Rome. It was beyond picturesque and we were
able to spend a well fulfilled 1-hour at the beautiful site. Our next stop
was St. John Lateran Basilica where the bishop of Rome presides at his home
parish. It was as extraordinary if not more than the previous church we
visited. Getting to see the popes chair, the main altar and beautiful side
altars really was truly amazing and so powerful to know that in that very
place the greatest sacrifice the world has known is celebrated by the passed
on years of apostolic tradition, by our current pope. Our last major stop
was the holy stairs. The very stairs that Jesus walked upon up to Pontius
Pilates thrown. It was so unbelievably powerful and extraordinary to even
know that our Lord walked up those stairs only to receive a sentence he knew
long before, to save us from our sins. As the day came to a close and we
left the magnificent sites I personally tried to soak up all I had seen and
remember it and hold it close as our journey in Italy will continue for
quite a few more days. Our day ended with down time and then dinner with
some true Italian pizza, which I personally thought to be quite delicious!
