August 10, 2005, Day 3

Semi-recovered from a lack of sleep, the St. Theresa, St. Thomas bunch awoke full of energy and excitement for the day ahead. As we set out to visit the headquarters of our faith, Vatican City, many were giddy with the anticipation of visiting the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica (or at least I was). Awed by the beauties of Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, we left St. Peter’s Square with bags of souvenirs and bellies full of food. Our tour guide painted a picture of life as a gladiator for us at the Coliseum as we proceeded through the Roman Forum. Bedazzled by the immense amount of manpower required to keep the Roman Empire afloat we commuted to the Pantheon followed by a saunter onto the Spanish Steps. By mid afternoon David, our British, Italian-speaking guide, had sufficiently worn everyone’s legs out. We spent the afternoon seeing the Trevi fountain and the tomb of St. Ignatius while grabbing every possible seat, snacking Gelato, and spending our euros. Now sitting at the hotel, after a 12 hour, plus day, we’re hitting the showers, snoozing, and preparing for Florence.

Well, today was quite a day. It was long, but quite eventful. To start off the day, we went to the Vatican... What a way to start the day!!! It was quite mind-blowing to feel so insignificant in such a magnificent palace. The best part of the day was seeing the Sistine Chapel. We, after magnified by the beauty, headed to the Coliseum. We ate for a little bit, and walked through the Roman Forum. We were awed by the Pantheon, and walked through the Spanish steps. I was amazed by the Trevi Fountain. I didn’t realize how big it was…I loved it. And, now we are getting ready to go to Florence.
