Diary entry from Patty Lafferty
Today started off with a seven thirty wake up call. We ate breakfast and met the
tour guide at the Coliseum. I really enjoyed seeing it because you could walk through and
really get the feeling of the history, thinking of the events that took place in the that
very place so many years ago. From there we walked through the Roman Forum. It
was interesting to see the architecture from that time. From there we had free time
and I walked around to many of the churches of the city, what also had great historical
meaning. At seven we all went to dinner followed by a tour of the city by night, led
by Salvatori.

Travel log
Today we woke up, ate breakfast at the hotel again, and drove to the Coliseum in Rome
for a tour. In front of the Coliseum were people dressed up like Roman Gladiators.
A few people were grabbed by the soldiers as they walked by to take pictures.
After the pictures, the gladiators demanded money, and since they were pretty big,
we obligingly paid. After walking through the Coliseum, we walked through the Roman Forum,
which was right next to the Coliseum. One of the neat souvenirs that people bought
was a book that showed a picture of what the Roman sites look like now, and then you fold
a mask over the picture that shows what the same site looked like several thousand years
ago. After the walking tour, people were given the rest of the day as free time.
Two churches that a lot of people travelled to were St. John Lateran and St. Mary
Major. Both of these churches had a Holy Door that the pilgrims passed through. We
met at seven for dinner and then after dinner, our bus driver Salvatori gave a tour of the
city on his bus. Some people opted just to go back to the hotel during the day, and
so they got to meet the taxi drivers of Rome firsthand. Needless to say, each of
those people probably have lots of stories to tell.
