Diary entry from Joe Campbell
At least yesterday started off well (day 6). We woke up, ate our bread, and
hopped on the bus to go to the Basillica in Lisieux. We had Mass in the Crypte and I
got to serve. I have been lucky to get the opportunity to serve in a couple
beautiful Churches here in Europe. Again, we hopped on the bus and headed back to
Paris where we saw the Basillica of the Sacred Heart. It was totally awesome except
for the scaffolding. After dinner we headed to the train where we were confined to
inhumanely small quarters. The pilgrimmage has been excellent for me so far.
Celebrating Mass in the incredible churches has really helped guide me toward what I want
this experience to be.

Travel log
Today we woke up, packed our bags and put them on the bus, and headed towards the
Basillica. It was our last morning in Lisieux, and we had just gotten used to the
three person elevator that bounced and the dark staircase. At Mass in the Crypte,
Fr. Jim had Eric and Nikki come forward and renew their marriage vows, celebrating five
years of marriage. In previous days Fr. Jim had asked the teens to discern their
vocation, whether to the priesthood, religious life, or marriage. After having Mass
in the Crypte, we got on the bus and drove to Paris where we drove past the Eiffel Tower
and then drove up a big hill overlooking the city. On top of the hill was the
Basillica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was a really big church, but there was a
lot of construction going on. Outside were lots of street vendors and probably
pick-pockets. To get up the steep hill you had the choice of either paying 8 Francs
($1.20) or hiking up like 150 stairs. Right next to the Basillica was another
church, St. Pierre Montmartre. The church was not as big, but had beautiful artwork.
The part of town was the artist district where there are a ton of vendors and an
artist will paint a portrait of you for like 200 Francs ($30). From there we ate
dinner and bought snacks for the train. We had turkey for dinner again (4th time) in
a nice, but hot restaurant. We then headed for the train. Each compartment
held six people and was extremely cramped. Although once everyone was settled, there
was plenty of room for people to lay down and get some sleep (if they could get used to
the rocking of the train and listening to other people talking through the walls).
The train arrived in Pisa, Italy about 7 am, making it a twelve hour ride.
